The Christian Smith Family
Christian is recovered from addiction and alcoholism. He and Kelle have been married for 40 years and have 4 children, Adam (Natalie), Chad (Haley), Sara (Holden) and Abbey (Cody). They are blessed with 8 grandchildren, soon to be 9.
Christian has shared his story before, but wanted to have his wife and children share their side of things. Sara represents the siblings as she shares her perspective of addiction from a child's view. She says she didn’t see her dad sober until she was 17 years old. Sara now works in the recovery community as a Substance Use Disorder Counselor and is pursuing her master’s degree as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Sara has a passion for recovery and change. She is a wonderful ambassador for recovery.
Kelle also has her perspective as a wife of an addict/alcoholic. She has been involved in Christian’s addiction from day one. Kelle has worked in hospital administration for 34 years.
Kelle and Sara tell how Christian’s addiction caused much pain and hurt in the marriage and the family. They share that Christian was the only one who couldn’t see the pain he was causing. Sara says. “Change is uncomfortable; however, we know change is inevitable. Addiction impacted our family in ways which were horrific.” Sara goes on to say; “We wouldn’t wish addiction/alcoholism on our worst enemy, however, it has been one of the greatest blessings in our lives. To see the change our father has made in his life has been miraculous. Our dad is our hero.”
